IGWS exhibits are open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Learning Lab is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday-Friday, with weekend and evening hours available for special events. Browse the events webpage to see upcoming events and programs.

Tours and Programs

The IGWS offers a variety of programming to meet the needs of teachers, students, and visitors. Drop by for a self-guided exploration or contact us to schedule a group visit.

  • Hands On! Self-guided tour- Drop-in 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday for a firsthand exploration of the rock, mineral, and fossil specimens in the Learning Lab. Explore at your own pace with self-guided materials.
  • Class Field Trips- Bring your preschool, K-12, university, and homeschool groups to the Learning Lab for a free field trip. Each field trip includes a 30 to 40 minute presentation, several hands-on activities, and a collections scavenger hunt. Tours can be scheduled during our normal business hours and on select Saturdays; all dates are subject to availability.
  • Storytime at the Survey- Look, listen, and have fun with picture book readings connected to objects in our collection on select Mondays. This program is drop-in, no registration is required.
  • GeoCreate- Dive into a range of art-making practices and make your own artwork inspired by our collections. This drop-in program is offered on select Tuesdays, no registration is required.
  • Webinars and Lectures- Are you interested in learning more about a specific topic of Indiana geology? Contact us to schedule a virtual webinar or group lecture at the Learning Lab.

The IGWS is located on the east end of the Geology Building at 1001 E. 10th Street. The accessible entrance to the building is located on the N. Walnut Grove side of the building.

Transportation & Parking

We are located near several Bloomington Transit bus stops. Hourly street parking is available on the east and north side of the building through the ParkMobile app. Free weekend parking is available in the Forrest Avenue parking garage.

Individuals with EM-P passes can park in the small lot directly behind the Geology Building, the Forrest Avenue parking garage, or the Fee Lane parking garage. EM-S passes can park in the small lot directly behind Informatics or the lot along the train tracks at Woodlawn and 11th Street.


  • Elevator- Our passenger elevator goes to all levels of the building.
  • Restrooms- Restrooms are stroller and wheelchair accessible. Double-stall restrooms are available on all floors.
  • Service Animals- Service animals specially trained to assist a person with a disability are welcome in all Survey facilities.
  • Large Print Labels- Large print labels are available for visitors with low vision at the Learning Lab desk.
