(812) 855-5067

John Steinmetz, former Director of the IGS and State Geologist, is a senior scientist whose main areas of research are in economic geology, marine micropaleontology, and high-resolution biostratigraphy. John received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Geology from the University of Illinois and his doctorate in Marine Geology and Geophysics from the University of Miami.

As Director during a time of rapidly changing technology and while the role of the state geological survey continued to evolve, John had numerous accomplishments. Foremost among them were the initiation and continuing support of IndianaMap, which has grown to become the most comprehensive, state-based geographic information system in the nation, and the archiving of unique and extremely valuable samples and data resources. The IGS thanks John Steinmetz for his 17 years of leadership and for creating an environment of research excellence.
