Issue: | Whetstone tombstones are pre-Civil War monuments that originated in Orange County, Indiana. Their distribution can be used to document trade routes in the early part of Indiana's history. |
Objective: | The purpose of this project is to continue to maintain and update the whetstone tombstone database. |
Approach: | Cemeteries that contain whetstone monuments are located and checked; updates to the database are added. |
Products: | The whetstone tombstone database that will be archived at the Indiana Geological Survey and the Indiana Historical Society. |
Benefits: | This research is leading to a better understanding of the pre-Civil War funeral industry, trade routes, and commerce in Indiana. |
