||The IGWS renovation began in 2018 with recommendations from an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the American Institute for Conservation & Foundation for Advancement in Conservation (AIC-FAIC) Conservation Assessment Program Study (CAP). The executive summary listed multiple short-, medium-, and long-term goals to help IGWS navigate challenges during and after the renovation. Three apply to this project: (1) renovate existing facilities to meet contemporary standards and provide future adaptability/flexibility, (2) install compactor systems for collections storage, and (3) complete digital inventories and a collections catalog. Additional report comments address “insufficient space in existing storage areas” and non-standard item enclosures that “are not archival and can cause damage to collections materials.”
To date, the survey has addressed nine of the 14 short- and medium-term goals to accomplish within five years of the CAP assessment. In 2022, the IGWS meets its fourth year of renovation-focused challenges with a plan to advance two more goals while continuing progress on the three substantially more difficult long-term challenges. Through these efforts, the survey commits to finding a balance between the necessary growth inherent in fulfilling its role as the state’s sole repository of geological materials and the essential culling, conservation, and innovation required for responsible utilization of its available infrastructure resources.

||Part A – Cross-check records against prior inventories to find missing or misplaced material; retain only original or annotated gamma log material; arrange by geographic location; apply detailed labels; upload
inventory metadata to the USGS National Digital Catalog.
Part B – Identify digital assets relevant to the survey’s mission; describe, organize, and make assets accessible through the IGWS CollectiveAccess-ResourceSpace Tandem (CARST) management system.

||The on-site records center creates a space that is safe for valuable geological records and comfortable for anyone who wants to utilize them. The new boxes and shelving will better preserve, organize, and extend the life of the records by protecting them from light, dust, and wear and tear, while slowing the natural aging of the paper.
Adding records to CARST will give scientists and the public access to resources that were hard to find or not available before. Once in the system, the files can be easily searched for, managed, and protected from loss.
Both access locations provide users with a gateway to finding non-biased geological data. These data can help guide the local, regional, and global use of Indiana’s mineral and energy wealth and address environmental protection challenges.
