Director: Polly Sturgeon
Other Researchers: Matthew Johnson, Jennifer Lanman, Gary Motz
Funding: Indiana University - Indiana Geological & Water Survey
Issue: Previous IGWS education efforts have been largely offsite, exhibits have been disjointed among different floors, and the Education Collection has been house behind locked doors. The Learning Lab will combine the public-serving efforts to provide updated exhibits and programming in a central, accessible location.
Objective: This project will serve as an example for hands-on learning with collections on the IU campus.
Approach: The Education Collection will be rehoused to the Geology Building during the spring and summer of 2021; specimens will be checked for condition and housed in archival trays. In the fall 2021, the Learning Lab will open for programming and a new exhibit will be debuted in the lobby. Exhibits will rotate at least twice per year, and corresponding programs and digital content will be offered.
Products: Functional education space
Benefits: Provide earth-science education opportunities at the Survey's main facility.
