Issue: The IGWS has participated in the STATEMAP component of the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program since its inception in 1993. During this time more than 200 published and unpublished map and map-related documents have been completed by the IGWS and submitted to the USGS. Currently, there is no one spreadsheet/database that documents all of the products.
Objective: This task focuses on creating and maintaining a spreadsheet/database that contains information for all the STATEMAP maps and map-related documents that the IGWS has completed and/or submitted to the USGS since 1993. The spreadsheet/database will contain the following information for each map or map-related product: the year that the project was initiated, the name of the mapped area, the map scale, the amount of federal and state dollars contributed to the product, designation of each map as a bedrock or surficial map, the IGWS publication number, the availability of the product from the IGWS Bookstore, the correct citation for the IGWS published and unpublished documents, and the USGS STATEMAP grant number. Using the spreadsheet/database, an updated interactive map will be created to showcase the mapping efforts in the state. This map (located on the STATEMAP webpage) will provide links to published STATEMAP products for the public; another version will provide links to both published and unpublished STATEMAP products for the IGWS staff. The data could also be used to either update the Data Collection Viewer or create a new application, the IGWS Data Hub, to showcase all survey work. A second phase to the project could be to create a StoryMap.
Approach: The information relating to the STATEMAP products will be gathered from various sources, e.g., the IGWS Bookstore, digital information in the STATEMAP directories on the IGWS file server, digital information archived in Box, and STATEMAP paper documents currently archived offsite. The interactive map will provide direct links to the archived maps and available data associated with each map.
Products: Products include (1) the interactive map showcasing STATEMAP projects in Indiana and (2) the spreadsheet/database information, which will be compiled in a database, and will be available on the updated IGWS STATEMAP webpage at https://igws.indiana.edu/statemap/. The information can also be used to update the IGWS Bookstore citations of the published map products at https://igws.indiana.edu/bookstore/.
Benefits: The STATEMAP webpage will be available to all IGWS staff and can also be accessed by the general public, planners, consultants, and state and federal agencies. The proper citations for the map products will be available on the IGWS Bookstore.
