Funding: Indiana University - Indiana Geological & Water Survey
Issue: Many IGWS publications from the late 1980s, 1990s and 2000s were prepared with software which is now outdated or they exist as documents in paper format only. The research efforts, demonstrated by these publications continue to represent valuable research products, many of which are no longer 'discoverable', but many of which are requested. Many of these publications are listed as out-of-print on the IGWS bookstore and are no longer available to our clients. The IGWS Photographer continues to need assistance with photo shoots and processing of images related to IGWS research.
Objective: To continue to make sure all publications and products produced by the IGWS are available digitally and are 'discoverable' to both the staff researchers and to the public. To continue to assist the IGWS Photographer with timely completion of IGWS projects and publications.
Approach: Continue to scan non-digital IGWS publications, OCR the digital file (when needed) so the file has search capabilities, and save as PDF files. Copy files to the !OpenAccess directory for all staff to disseminate to IGWS customers and researchers. Archive PDF files to IU’s Scholarly Data Archive when appropriate. Digital files which are not in a usable digital file format, will either be converted to a newer usable format or printed out from the command line, scanned and converted to a PDF file format. Disclaimers for Open File Studies will be added when appropriate to do so. Continue to have an assistant photographer help with photo shoots in the studio and field and to process those images as the research projects necessitate.
Products: Digital version and archive of historical IGWS publications, historical documents, and historical maps.
Benefits: Continue to make historical documents 'discoverable' to the public by posting on IGWS bookstore, with the possibility of bringing in additional revenue if appropriate to charge for those documents. Continue to assist Bookstore Staff by furnishing PDF documents for out-of-print publications currently unavailable, but for which there are requests. Continue to provide the IGWS with a digital archive of its publications.
