||Use of drill cores, one of the premier IGS sample collections, has dropped to a dangerous level. This disuse jeopardizes the archiving and responsible utilization of samples, central to the mission of the IGS. During a time of active construction and reorganization on the IU-Bloomington campus, it is critical that we demonstrate the value of our collections, lest they and the facilities that protect them be pronounced derelict and thereby disposable. As an initial step toward generating new interest and to revive dormant investigations, we propose to create drill core distribution map.
Currently, data about IGS drill cores is available only in the PDMS and is difficult for users to capture in a comprehensive manner. For instance, a user wants to know the location of all IGS cores that penetrate the Cambrian Eau Claire Formation, currently they must manually search core by core by clicking each core well symbol and following several links. Our simple map will provide users the ability to view the distribution of cores across the state and know at a glance the intervals penetrated by displaying symbols keyed to the state’s stratigraphic column.
||The objectives of this project are to:
Create a derivative dataset that is connected to the current IGS drill cores (data from the PDMS) that can be used for mapping core locations, their sampled intervals, and reference numbers.
Assign created stratigraphic unit abbreviations, an additional field, in the existing IGS drill core location data table or tables. This field will be used for labeling the locations on the map and give user a quick reference to the stratigraphic unit without having to search through many attributes.
||Extract relational data tables from existing IGS databases for drill cores in our collection. Create a standard series of stratigraphic unit abbreviations (typically following those of previously published maps)
||Create Miscellaneous Map at 1:500,000 that shows a snap shot of the data.
||The results of this project will boost the visibility of the outstanding archived material curated by the IGS and thereby increase interest and study of our premiere sample collection.
