Issue: Standard tests (ASTM or, formerly, American Society for Testing and Materials) for abrasion loss, compressive strength, bulk modulus, and absorption/specific gravity were conducted on more than 2,000 samples of Indiana Limestone and other building stone products. A quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) evaluation of the data set and ready access to the data were problematic.
Objective: A digital database has been prepared of the results of more than 2,000 physical tests performed on Indiana building stone materials, which includes all the variables detailed for each of the standardized ASTM tests performed along with sample location information (where available). We evaluated the data set for QA/QC standards.
Approach: Limestone sample data sets were placed into two basic categories: (1) data compiled from the early 1950s to late 1987; and (2) data compiled after 1987, subsequent to which the Baldwin press used to conduct the tests was calibrated on an annual basis.
Products: Physical Testing Data for Indiana Limestone and Other Building Stone Materials: A Computer Database, by J.R. Hill, W.A. Hasenmueller, and S.S. Frushour, Indiana Geological Survey Occasional Paper 66, was published in 2001 and comprises a written report and a CD-ROM.
Benefits: The dimension limestone industry in Indiana is the principal beneficiary of this work, but architects and users of Indiana Limestone also can make use of the testing data.
