Geologic support of abandoned and active coal mines in Indiana for ventilation design

Issue: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has undertaken a study to evaluate ventilation systems in underground coal mines and to identify ways in which improvement of ventilation systems in relation to different methane sources can increase mine safety. The Indiana Geological Survey was assisting the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in this research
Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate ventilation systems in underground coal mines and to identify ways in which improvement of ventilation systems in relation to different methane sources can increase mine safety. Coal mine methane has always been considered as a danger for underground coal mining. It can create a serious threat to mining safety and production. Proper mine ventilation can keep methane levels below the explosive limit and at the same time coal seam degasification is a means to recover energy from the methane gas retained in coal.
Approach: IGS personnel provides basic geologic support, data compilation and mapping for the NIOSH initiative.

Benefits: This project will aim at detailed understanding of the heterogeneity of the gas-bearing coals and associated strata in a selected area in Illinois Basin and estimate gas potential of abandoned mines and evaluate the danger they may pose to active workings in terms of methane emissions.
