Extent, characteristics, and regional relations of the interlobate region in north-central Indiana

Issue: Current knowledge of sedimentology and stratigraphy of the differing ice lobes in the interlobate region in Indiana is fragmented. A clear understanding of the stratigraphy, extent, and chronology of each lobe will improve the quality of mapping northern Indiana.
Objective: This project aims to develop an understanding of the physical properties, stratigraphic relations, and boundary conditions of the Saginaw, Huron-Erie, and Lake Michigan lobes
Approach: Data includes water-well, project testholes, and gamma-ray logs to determine stratigraphy and construct cross-sections. Sediment samples from cores will be analysed for sedimentological and mineralogical properties. Individual samples will be collected, where possible, for chronological analysis.
Products: Products will include a project database of stratigraphy and chronology, regional cross-sections, and geologic maps
Benefits: Detailed knowledge of the interlobate sediments will enhance geologic mapping in the region. The interlobate area is dominated by coarse-grained sediments and contains the most prolific groundwater resources in the state. Enhanced knowledge will aid regional plannin, wellfield development,and groundwater remediation activities.
