Mapping the Quaternary Geology in Kosciusko County

Issue: Natural resource needs and population impacts require geologic maps and map products in urban areas and along transportation corridors. Specific issues in Indiana that glacial geologic mapping addresses are: 1)Distribution and lithologic variation of aquifers within glacial and bedrock deposits; 2)Overall variation of glacial deposits and aquifer (geologic unit containing potable ground water) conditions; 3)Distribution and availability of sand and gravel for construction aggregate; and 4)Geologic hazards and availability of resources related to new highway construction.
Objective: This overall objective of this project is to provide a county map (1:48,000-scale) to provide a detailed framework of the unconsolidated sediments and landforms in Kosciusko County. Mapping will provide background for making geotechnical, transportation, and land-use planning decisions in an area dominated by coarse-grained sediments and natural lakes. Mapping will also increase knowledge of ice lobe dynamics in northern Indiana, an ares of multiple ice lobe interactions.
Approach: Mapping began in the east-central part of the county and is progressing into the central part. Future mapping will complete the quadrangles along the county boundaries. Mapping involves classifying and interpreting geomporphic features, both depositional and erosional, and subsurface sediments. Data includes water-well records, work maps, field observations, project borings, and other available data. Geomorphic interpretations are based on LiDAR DEMs, and field observations.
