Simulation of CO2 Storage in the Arches Province of the Midwestern United States

Issue: Understanding the movement, fate, and distribution of fluids in the subsurface following the injection of supercritical carbon dioxide into the Mount Simon Sandstone is a necessary step to better evaluate the technical conditions (ie. infrastructure, permits, etc.) to implement large-scale CO2 storage in the region.
Objective: This study will produce a three dimensional model of the subsurface geology in the Arches region, followed by numerical simulations on the injection of supercritical carbon dioxide into the Upper Cambrian Mount Simon Sandstone.
Approach: The geologic characteristics and petrophysical properties (porosity, permeability) of the subsurface will be interpreted by integrating different sources of data, such as geophysical logs (gamma ray, neutron, density, and sonic porosity), core data analyses, and reservoir test results from injection sites.
Products: Simulations output from a fully integrated three dimensional geologic, multi-phase, and variable density model run under different scenarios of injection rates and locations.
Benefits: This project will allow us to understand the different scenarios of large-scale injection of carbon dioxide and will facilitate the decision making process when deciding for location and implementation of a new carbon sequestration project.
