The Quake Cottage program provides citizens with a safe yet realistic experience of the intense shaking that can occur during an earthquake. The program, funded in partnership with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, promotes earthquake preparedness education in Indiana.
The Quake Cottage is an earthquake simulator (a 25 x 8 x 14 ft unit mounted on a double-axle trailer) that mimics the shaking experienced during earthquakes having magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 7.0. The interior replicates a typical living room (with items fastened down to protect occupants) and demonstrates the effectiveness of preparatory measures to protect lives and prevent damage to personal property. A large window allows audiences to view participants while the simulator is in operation.
Each Quake Cottage event is designed as an educational experience and is not intended for entertainment purposes. Our goal is to provide education about the science of earthquakes and the steps to take to prepare for an earthquake to a variety of target audiences, including emergency responders, medical professionals, business owners, students and teachers, and the general public.
The science related to earthquakes in the central United States and emergency preparedness information are available on this Web site. The Indiana Geological Survey invites you to visit our site repeatedly as additional resources and newly scheduled events will be updated periodically.
