Dye traces, typically conducted using nontoxic fluorescent dyes, help scientists determine if two water bodies are connected. These traces are often necessary when the connection between the water bodies is not visible at the surface, for example, when water sinks into the ground and flows through a cave to a spring.
The IGWS Dye Trace Application toolkit allows members of the public, government scientists, and those in private and corporate settings to share the findings from these studies. Included in this suite are tools to design the details of a dye trace, submit that plan for others to see during the proposed trace, and then record the results for review and public dissemination.
