ANNOTATION: This report summarizes a coal-bed methane study in Daviess County, Indiana. Coal samples were collected from three boreholes in order to determine if the coals of the Brazil and Staunton Formations contain significant coal-bed methane resources. Our study suggests that the gas content in the studied part of Daviess County is primarily a function of the depth. Coals that occur at the depths shalower than 160 ft have a very low gas content likely due to gas migration to the surface. Gas contents of the Staunton and Brazil Formation coals occurring deeper than 160 ft range from 41.6 scf/ton to 102.2 scf/ton. The Lower Block coal has the highest gas-in-place content and has the highest coal-bed resource potential.
