A central mission component of the Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS)—Indiana’s primary geoscience repository—is to collect, archive, and provide access to geological samples. Ever-evolving societal needs and technological advances guarantee the utility of Indiana cores in perpetuity. The IGWS Research and Teaching Core Repository preserves more than 1,000 bedrock cores that total over 150,000 linear feet of cored rock, representing more than 250,000 feet of drilling. The bounty of Indiana’s energy, mineral, and water resources are documented in these archived samples of the state’s subsurface. The great expense of recovering geologic samples at depths of hundreds to thousands of feet below the surface means that many samples in this collection are extremely valuable and precious. Given modern drilling costs, the replacement value of the cumulative samples in this collection is in the millions of dollars. This map illustrates important reference information about each core in the IGWS bedrock core archive at a glance. These data include the spatial location, IGWS reference number, total depth below the land surface captured by the core, top bedrock unit penetrated and depth to the top of that unit, and bottom bedrock unit penetrated and depth to the bottom of that unit. Most cores in this collection preserve a continuous stratigraphic succession between the bottom and top formations.
